What Is The Instructor Development Course Experience Like?

Training COMMENTS 17 Nov, 2017

Becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor allows you to turn your passion for diving into a career like no other. If you long for the weekend so you can finally get back in the water or spend all day dreaming of your next scuba vacation, completing the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) can make those dreams your everyday life.

The PADI IDC is your first step to becoming an instructor. This course covers everything you need to know to successfully teach diving. It’s also your chance to network with the lead figures in your dive shop and bond with your soon-to-be dive instructor peers. The material you’ll learn is at a professional level of rigor, but don’t worry, you’ll meet with your classmates to help each other through homework and have the ideal small group setting in class to get any questions answered step-by-step from your Course Director or Staff Instructor (two roles to aspire to as you enter the world of dive pros!)

Practice teaching sessions in the pool and open water will seem like fun and games as you pretend to be a new dive student, acting out “problems” for your fellow instructor-trainees to catch and correct. You’ll be diving and laughing with your new friends, while in reality these sessions are fully preparing you to help real life students learn to dive. In the classroom you’ll practice teaching the knowledge development material you used when you first learned scuba. Never been a teacher? That’s ok, PADI provides you with an easy to follow formula to effectively explain concepts to your students.

Once you’ve completed the IDC your ready to take the Instructor Exam (IE). This two-day exam is the second and final step to becoming a PADI instructor. Don’t worry about exam nerves, you’ll role into the IE with your IDC classmates like a seasoned football team hitting the field! You’ve practice together and now you get to test together. Your instructor will be there to cheer you on from the sidelines, ready to celebrate when you hear you passed at the end of the second day.
