Course Overview

Some of the best diving in the world happens in current. Drift diving lets you cover more ground, see more marine life, and experience the reef in a way that feels completely different from a still-water dive. When you go with the current instead of fighting it, diving becomes effortless.

The PADI Drift Diver Specialty Course teaches certified divers how to plan and conduct drift dives safely. You will learn how to read current conditions, manage buoyancy in moving water, stay connected with your buddy, communicate with the surface, and handle the unique challenges that come with diving in current.

At Sugar Land Dive Center, the Drift Diver Specialty is a smart choice for divers who plan to travel to current-prone destinations. Cozumel is one of the most famous drift diving locations in the world. The Maldives, Fiji, the Sea of Cortez, and many Pacific destinations are also known for strong currents and exceptional drift dives. This course prepares you for those experiences before you get on the plane.

This is also a practical safety course. Understanding how to enter and exit the water in current, how to signal your position to the boat, and how to avoid separation from your buddy are skills that matter every time you dive in moving water.

What You Will Learn

During the PADI Drift Diver Specialty Course, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize and assess current conditions before and during a dive
  • Plan drift dives and communicate the plan with your buddy and boat crew
  • Enter and exit the water safely in current
  • Maintain buoyancy control while moving with the current
  • Stay connected with your buddy in moving water
  • Use a surface marker buoy (SMB) to signal your position to the boat
  • Manage common drift diving situations with confidence
  • Work effectively with dive boat crews during drift dive pick-ups

Course Prerequisites

To enroll in the PADI Drift Diver Specialty Course, divers must be at least 12 years old and hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent. No prior current diving experience is required.

Who This Course Is For

The PADI Drift Diver Specialty is ideal for any certified diver who wants to become more comfortable in moving water or is planning a trip to a destination where drift diving is common. It is especially useful before traveling to Cozumel, the Maldives, Fiji, the Sea of Cortez, Indonesia, or any location where current is part of the normal dive experience.

It is also a strong pairing with the PADI Boat Diver and PADI DSMB Diver specialties, since all three skills come together on most drift dive trips.

The PADI Drift Diver Specialty counts toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, which requires five specialty certifications, a Rescue Diver certification, and at least 50 logged dives.
