Where Houston Divers Go to Dive

Houston is not a coastal city, but Houston divers have more options than most people realize. Within a few hours you can be on a liveaboard heading to one of the most pristine coral reefs in the northern Gulf of Mexico, or underwater at a spring-fed lake with warm clear water and a wetsuit optional.

This guide covers the best scuba diving near Houston, from quick day trips to overnight adventures worth planning months in advance.

Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary

The Crown Jewel of Gulf of Mexico Diving

If you have only heard of one dive site in Texas waters, it is probably the Flower Garden Banks. Located approximately 115 miles south of Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico, the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is home to one of the healthiest coral reef ecosystems in the northern Gulf.

The Banks get their name from the colorful corals that blanket the tops of two salt dome formations rising from the Gulf floor. Staghorn and elkhorn coral, brain coral, star coral, and dozens of other species thrive here in water that stays warm and clear through most of the year.

What you can expect to see at the Flower Garden Banks:

  • Massive coral formations starting at about 60 feet
  • Manta rays, especially during late summer aggregations
  • Whale sharks (seasonal)
  • Reef sharks, sea turtles, and moray eels
  • Visibility regularly reaching 60 to 100 feet on good days

Getting there requires a liveaboard dive trip, typically departing from Freeport or Galveston. The crossing takes roughly 12 hours each way, and trips are usually scheduled Thursday through Sunday to maximize bottom time. The dive season generally runs from spring through early fall, with summer months offering the calmest sea conditions.

This is a destination worth planning for. Advanced Open Water certification is recommended, and you will need to be comfortable diving in open ocean conditions. Sugar Land Dive Center organizes group trips to the Flower Garden Banks. Contact us for upcoming trip dates.

Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, TX

The Best Freshwater Dive Site Near Houston

Blue Lagoon is about 70 miles north of Houston and is probably the most popular freshwater dive site for Houston-area divers. It is a spring-fed pond with water temperatures that stay warm year-round, making it comfortable to dive even in winter without a thick wetsuit.

Blue Lagoon is a managed dive site, which means you pay a fee to dive and there are facilities on-site. The visibility varies depending on recent rain and algae conditions, but on a good day you can expect 15 to 20 feet of visibility. The site is relatively shallow, making it a good spot for newly certified divers to get comfortable with their buoyancy skills before heading to deeper sites.

Blue Lagoon is also a popular spot for underwater photography and for doing checkout dives with dive buddies who want to practice skills in a low-pressure environment.

Gulf of Mexico Artificial Reefs

Offshore Wrecks and Platforms Accessible from Freeport and Galveston

Texas has an active artificial reef program that has sunk decommissioned oil platforms, ships, and other structures throughout the Gulf of Mexico. These artificial reefs attract fish quickly and develop diverse marine ecosystems within just a few years of being placed.

Popular artificial reef dive sites accessible from Houston-area departure ports include:

  • The Selma, a concrete ship from World War I resting in shallow water near Galveston
  • Various decommissioned oil platforms that have been converted to artificial reefs under the Texas Rigs-to-Reefs program
  • Numerous other permitted reef sites throughout the Texas shelf

Charter dive boats operating out of Freeport and Galveston run trips to these sites throughout the season. Conditions vary significantly depending on wind, currents, and time of year. Check with local charter operators for current site conditions before booking.

Balmorhea State Park

West Texas Springs Diving

Balmorhea State Park is not near Houston. It is located in far west Texas near the town of Toyahvale, about a seven-hour drive from Sugar Land. But it makes this list because it is one of the most unique dive experiences in the state and worth the trip if you are willing to make a weekend of it.

San Solomon Springs at Balmorhea feeds a large, crystal-clear swimming pool that is one of the largest spring-fed pools in the world. Visibility is exceptional, the water is cold and clear, and a surprising number of endemic fish species live in the spring system, including the Comanche Springs pupfish and several others found nowhere else on earth.

Diving at Balmorhea is permitted in designated areas. Water temperatures stay around 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, so a wetsuit is recommended.

Lake Travis near Austin

Hill Country Diving, Three Hours from Houston

Lake Travis is a Highland Lakes reservoir near Austin, about a three-hour drive from Houston. It is one of the clearest lakes in Texas, with visibility that can reach 20 to 30 feet on a calm, clear day. The lake has significant depth in some areas, cliff faces, and a variety of submerged terrain that makes it more interesting than a typical Texas reservoir.

Several dive sites along Lake Travis are accessible by boat or from shore. The lake is also home to a submerged ghost town in one section, which attracts divers looking for something different. Make a weekend of it and explore Austin while you are there.

Possum Kingdom Lake

West Texas Reservoir Diving

About three and a half hours west of Houston, Possum Kingdom Lake offers some of the clearest reservoir diving in Texas. The lake is deep in some areas and has distinctive cliff formations and rocky underwater terrain. Visibility is better than most Texas lakes, particularly in drier months when runoff is low.

Possum Kingdom is a good option for Houston divers looking for a diving weekend that is closer than the Hill Country but offers decent visibility and interesting underwater topography.
