How the Cozumel IDC Works
The PADI Instructor Development Course prepares qualified dive leaders to become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors. During the IDC, candidates develop the teaching ability, knowledge of standards, in-water control, judgment, and confidence needed to begin working as dive professionals.
The Cozumel IDC includes PADI IDC eLearning, the PADI IDC Digital Backpack, and all required IDC materials. Candidates also receive instructor development training with PADI Course Director Phillip Hetherington, including IDC Prep, classroom development, confined-water and open-water teaching practice, standards review, skill development, and preparation for the PADI Instructor Examination.
The goal of the Cozumel IDC is not just to prepare candidates for the Instructor Examination. Our goal is to develop confident, capable PADI Instructors who are ready to teach, make sound decisions, manage students effectively, and excel as dive professionals after certification.

Training Beyond the IE
The goal of the Cozumel IDC is not simply to pass the PADI Instructor Exam. The goal is to help candidates become confident, capable PADI Instructors who are prepared to teach real students after certification.
Throughout the program, candidates work on more than presentations and exam preparation. We focus on the practical skills and judgment needed to manage students, organize training dives, solve problems, apply PADI Standards, and make good decisions as a dive professional.
This approach helps candidates develop confidence in the areas that matter most after the IDC, including:
-
Teaching real students, not just passing evaluations
-
Managing confined water and open water training sessions
-
Applying PADI Standards correctly and confidently
-
Improving control, positioning, and communication
-
Building professional judgment and situational awareness
-
Handling common student challenges
-
Preparing for life as a working PADI Instructor
The IDC prepares you for the PADI Instructor Examination, but our goal is bigger than that. We want candidates to leave the program ready to begin teaching with confidence, professionalism, and a clear understanding of what it means to be a PADI Instructor.
