Is PADI Rescue Diver Right for You?

Phillip Hetherington   Sep 07, 2026

Rescue Diver has a reputation. The name alone makes it sound intense, maybe even a little scary. In practice, most divers who take it come away saying it was one of the most rewarding courses they've done, and a lot more fun than the name suggests. Here's what it's actually about.

It's About Confidence, Not Just Emergencies

Yes, the PADI Rescue Diver course teaches you how to prevent and manage dive emergencies. But most of what you learn along the way is about becoming a more aware, more capable diver in general. You'll get better at reading your buddy's body language, anticipating problems before they become serious, and staying calm under pressure. Those skills make every dive after this one feel easier, not just the emergencies you hope you never have.

What You'll Actually Practice

The course covers self-rescue, recognizing and responding to stressed or panicked divers, missing diver procedures, and rescuing an unresponsive diver both underwater and at the surface. Some of it happens in the classroom and pool, some in open water. It's hands-on and scenario-based rather than lecture-heavy, which is part of why people tend to enjoy it more than they expect to.

Prerequisites

You'll need to be a certified Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent), have current CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months, and be at least 12 years old. If you don't already have Emergency First Response training, we can help you get that squared away first.

Why Divers Take It Even If They Never Plan to "Rescue" Anyone

A lot of divers take Rescue not because they expect to need it, but because it's the point in most people's training where diving starts to feel less like following instructions and more like genuinely understanding the sport. It's also a required step if you're eventually considering Divemaster or instructor training, so it's a smart course to knock out even if professional-level diving isn't on your radar yet.

Is It Hard?

It's more demanding than Open Water or Advanced Open Water, physically and mentally, but it's built to be achievable with good instruction and a supportive class. Our instructors pace it so you're challenged without being overwhelmed.
