Why Nitrox Certification Is So Popular

Ask around any dive shop in the Houston area and you'll notice a pattern. Right after new divers finish Open Water and Advanced Open Water, Nitrox is usually the next course they sign up for. It's one of the most popular specialties PADI offers, and once you understand what it actually does, it's easy to see why.
What Nitrox Actually Is
Regular air is about 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Enriched air nitrox swaps in a higher percentage of oxygen, usually 32% or 36%, and less nitrogen. Since nitrogen is what builds up in your body during a dive and limits how long you can safely stay down, less of it means more flexibility with your dive time.
The PADI Enriched Air Diver course teaches you how to plan and dive safely with these gas blends. It's a short course, mostly classroom and academics, and there's no extra confined or open water training required beyond what you've already done.
Why Divers Love It
Longer bottom time is the big one. With less nitrogen loading, you can often extend your no-decompression limits compared to diving the same depth on regular air. That means more time actually looking at the reef instead of watching your dive computer count down.
Shorter surface intervals matter too, especially on multi-dive days or dive trips where you're doing two or three dives before lunch. Many divers also report feeling less fatigued after a day of diving on nitrox, since there's simply less nitrogen for your body to off-gas afterward.
Who Should Take It
Almost anyone who dives regularly benefits from this course. It's especially popular with divers planning a dive trip, since it lets you get more out of every day in the water. If you're already Open Water certified and diving more than once or twice a year, it's worth adding to your card.
What the Course Involves
You'll cover the basics of gas blending, oxygen exposure limits, how to analyze your own tank before a dive, and how to adjust your dive planning for enriched air. Most students finish the academic side in a single session, then get their card.
