PADI Mermaid Courses at Sugar Land Dive Center
Sugar Land Dive Center offers the complete PADI Mermaid program for kids and adults in the Houston area. Whether you want to try it once, earn your first mermaid certification, or develop advanced underwater skills, we have a course for you. No scuba experience required to start.
Our mermaid courses are taught by certified PADI Mermaid Instructors in our indoor heated pool in Sugar Land, TX, convenient for divers and swimmers from Houston, Katy, Pearland, Missouri City, Richmond, and the surrounding area.
The PADI Mermaid Program
PADI offers four levels of mermaid training. Each course builds on the last, so you can start where it makes sense for your age and experience and progress from there.
- Discover Mermaid: Try it for the first time. Age 6+. No experience needed.
- Basic Mermaid: Your first full mermaid certification. Age 6+.
- Mermaid: The full entry-level course with more skills and sessions. Age 10+.
- Advanced Mermaid: Advanced technique and performance skills. Age 12+. Requires PADI Mermaid certification.

Discover Mermaid
Try Mermaiding for the First Time
The PADI Discover Mermaid experience is a fun, no-pressure introduction to mermaid swimming. You will slip on a mermaid tail, get a quick briefing from your instructor, and spend time in a shallow pool learning what it feels like to move through the water like a mermaid.
This is not a full certification course. It is a try-it experience perfect for first-timers who want to see if mermaiding is for them before committing to a full course.
Who Can Join: Age 6 and up. Be comfortable in the water. No swimming, snorkeling, or diving experience required.
What's Included: Instructor briefing and one confined water pool session.
PADI Basic Mermaid Course
Your First Mermaid Certification
The PADI Basic Mermaid course is the first full mermaid certification in the PADI program. In this course, you will learn about mermaiding culture, safety, and equipment, and practice foundational mermaid skills in a pool setting.
The Basic Mermaid course includes PADI eLearning you can complete at your own pace, followed by a hands-on pool session with your instructor.
Who Can Join: Age 6 and up. Must swim 25 meters (80 feet) without swim aids and float at the surface for 3 minutes. No dive experience required.
What's Included: PADI Basic Mermaid eLearning and one confined water session.
PADI Mermaid Course
The Full Entry-Level Mermaid Experience
The PADI Mermaid course is a step up from the Basic Mermaid and includes more skills, more pool time, and a more complete introduction to the art of mermaiding. This course includes the full Basic Mermaid curriculum, so there is no need to take Basic Mermaid separately before enrolling.
You will learn dolphin kicks, underwater somersaults, bubble rings, rescue techniques for mermaids, and more, all in a fun, supportive pool environment.
The course includes PADI Mermaid eLearning and two confined water sessions in our indoor heated pool.
Who Can Join: Age 10 and up. Must swim 50 meters (165 feet) without swim aids and float at the surface for 5 minutes. No dive experience required.
What's Included: PADI Mermaid eLearning, Basic Mermaid curriculum, and two pool sessions.
PADI Advanced Mermaid Course
Take Your Skills to the Next Level
The PADI Advanced Mermaid course is for certified PADI Mermaids who are ready to develop more powerful technique, explore deeper pool work, and refine the kind of fluid, graceful movement that defines advanced mermaiding.
This course focuses on advanced dolphin kick technique, deeper breath-hold skills, buoyancy control, streamlined dives, performance-level underwater movement, and advanced mermaid safety protocols.
The course includes PADI Advanced Mermaid eLearning and multiple confined water sessions in our indoor heated pool.
Who Can Join: Age 12 and up. Must hold a valid PADI Mermaid certification or equivalent. Be in good physical health.

All mermaid courses are taught in our indoor heated pool, which means training is comfortable year-round. Our PADI-certified instructors bring real enthusiasm for mermaiding and work with students of all ages and ability levels. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to scuba dive?
No. Mermaid courses are completely separate from scuba diving. You do not need any dive experience to take a Discover Mermaid, Basic Mermaid, or PADI Mermaid course.
What age can kids start?
Kids as young as 6 can join the Discover Mermaid experience and the Basic Mermaid course. The PADI Mermaid course starts at age 10, and the Advanced Mermaid course starts at age 12.
Do I need to own a mermaid tail?

How long does each course take?
The Discover Mermaid experience is a single pool session. The Basic Mermaid and Mermaid courses include eLearning plus pool sessions scheduled with your instructor. The Advanced Mermaid course includes multiple sessions and is scheduled based on your availability. Contact us to discuss timing.
Can adults take mermaid courses?
Absolutely. Mermaiding is for all ages. Many of our students are adults who discovered mermaiding and wanted to develop their skills in a fun, structured setting. There is no upper age limit for any of our mermaid courses.
