How to Become a Scuba Instructor in Houston, TX
Phillip Hetherington Jun 23, 2026
Every scuba instructor started exactly where you are right now: curious about whether teaching diving could actually be a career. The answer is yes. And if you are in the Houston area, you are in one of the best places in Texas to make it happen.
Sugar Land Dive Center is a PADI 5 Star IDC Center in Sugar Land, TX, which means we hold the highest PADI rating available and are authorized to train and certify PADI Instructors. This guide walks you through every step of the path, from getting certified as a diver all the way to teaching your first Open Water class.
Step 1: Get Your PADI Open Water Diver Certification
Everything starts here. The PADI Open Water Diver course is the entry point into recreational scuba diving and the foundation for every certification that follows. You will learn dive theory, practice skills in a pool, and complete four open water training dives.
If you are already a certified diver, skip to the next step. If not, the PADI Open Water course at Sugar Land Dive Center is the fastest way to start your path toward becoming a scuba instructor in Houston.
Step 2: Complete Your PADI Advanced Open Water Course
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course builds on your Open Water training with five adventure dives, two of which (deep diving and underwater navigation) are required. The rest are electives you choose based on your interests.
Advanced Open Water is a prerequisite for Rescue Diver and gives you more logged dives and broader experience in the water. Most instructors look back on this course as where they really started to feel at home underwater.
Step 3: Earn Your PADI Rescue Diver Certification
Rescue Diver is the most demanding recreational dive course, and most divers say it is also the most rewarding. You will learn to recognize and manage dive emergencies, assist distressed divers, and respond to underwater accidents.
The course requires a current Emergency First Response (EFR) certification covering Primary and Secondary Care, which you can complete at Sugar Land Dive Center. Rescue Diver builds the judgment and leadership skills you will use every day as a dive instructor.
Step 4: Complete Emergency First Response (EFR) Training
PADI requires all instructor candidates to hold a current EFR certification (within the last 24 months). Emergency First Response covers CPR, AED use, first aid, and secondary care skills. The EFR course is fast, practical, and valuable well beyond the dive world.
Sugar Land Dive Center offers EFR courses and EFR Instructor training for divers who want to add that credential to their resume.
Step 5: Become a PADI Divemaster
Divemaster is the first professional level in the PADI system. It is also the step where most divers realize they want to make this a career.
As a Divemaster candidate, you will log a minimum of 40 dives to start and complete 60 dives by the time you certify. You will assist instructors with courses, lead certified divers on dives, and develop the leadership and organizational skills that form the backbone of good instruction.
To enroll in the PADI Divemaster program at Sugar Land Dive Center, you need your Rescue Diver certification, a current EFR cert, and at least 40 logged dives. The training is hands-on and takes place at our indoor heated pool and local dive sites.
Step 6: Complete the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is where you learn to teach. The IDC is an intensive training program that prepares you to deliver PADI courses, evaluate student performance, and run safe, organized dive sessions.
IDC training includes the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. You will practice teaching dive theory, demonstrate skills in the pool and open water, and work through rescue scenarios and presentation exercises under the guidance of a PADI Course Director.
Because Sugar Land Dive Center is a PADI 5 Star IDC Center in the Houston area, our IDC is led by an experienced PADI Course Director with a track record of producing high-quality instructors. This is not a conveyor belt program. We invest in every candidate we take through the IDC.
Prerequisites for the IDC:
- PADI Divemaster certification (or qualifying equivalent)
- 100 logged dives
- Current EFR certification (within 24 months)
- 18 years old minimum
- Medical clearance
Step 7: Pass the PADI Instructor Examination (IE)
The PADI Instructor Examination (IE) is the final step. It is administered by a PADI Examiner, independent of your IDC training facility, which keeps the certification standard objective and consistent worldwide.
The IE tests your dive theory knowledge, confined water teaching skills, open water teaching skills, and rescue performance. Candidates who prepare thoroughly through a quality IDC program pass at a high rate. Sugar Land Dive Center's IDC candidates are among the best prepared in the Houston area.
Pass the IE and you are a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
What Comes After Your PADI Instructor Certification?
Once you are a certified PADI Instructor, the career options open up. Houston-area dive shops, dive resorts worldwide, liveaboard operations, and corporate dive programs all hire PADI Instructors. You can also work as an independent contractor, run your own courses, and continue up the PADI professional ladder.
Sugar Land Dive Center offers ongoing professional development for instructors, including:
- IDC Staff Instructor training
- Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) program
- Specialty Instructor certifications
- EFR Instructor training
How Long Does It Take to Become a Scuba Instructor in Houston?
The timeline varies based on how quickly you progress, how often you dive, and your availability for training. Most candidates moving through the program steadily can complete the full path from Open Water to PADI Instructor in one to two years. The Divemaster program is often the longest phase, since it requires time in the water accumulating experience.
Many Houston-area candidates also work around full-time jobs during the earlier certification levels before committing fully to the IDC. We can help you build a schedule that fits your life.
